Mill Dam / Harton Quays

Ship building, engineering, coal – The Mill Dam/Harton Quays was at the heart of our town’s industrial revolution.

About the site

Our waterfront has changed much since its glory days. We’ve already begun to invest in it but more needs to be done.

Some things for you to consider

Plenty of opportunity

Historic Mill Dam/Harton Quays is prime waterfront with fantastic views across the Tyne. Already a popular residential area with some good pubs, it also has strong transport links, is close to the town centre and The Word and is home to prime destinations The Customs House and Harton Quays Park.

A couple of challenges to overcome

Despite this, not enough people visit. Perhaps it’s because too much space is unused or given over to car parking or because it’s seen as home to industrial units.

Some ideas to explore

Customs House Refurbishment

The Customs House is a beautiful Grade II listed building full of history. We don’t think this should change – but we could make more of it. Amazing places to eat and drink along with increased rehearsal space could make this a major cultural destination bringing life back to our riverside.

Harton Quays Site

The chimney is all that’s left to mark the former Glassworks site in Mill Dam – which has inspired a few thoughts for the future.

Option 1

A combination of new homes with riverside views and restaurants or bars that would complement the Customs House refurbishment and wider Mill Dam area increasing visits to this part of town.

Option 2

A residential/accommodation led scheme taking advantage of the wonderful waterfront location.

Option 3

A more flexible alternative combining improved landscaping with a home for food, drink or retail outlets in pop-up or temporary structures.

The Ferry Landing

Space next to the landing could be an ideal site for a restaurant, bar or café – a place to sit in or out or cycle to – as there’s plenty of room for bike storage.
