South Shields Old Town Hall

Why we asked

Protecting our heritage and shaping the future

We secured funding through the Community Regeneration Partnership with Government to explore bringing the Old Town Hall back into regular use. As part of this, it is important to make sure local people are involved in how the funding is used.

The building has been at the heart of South Shields for more than 250 years. It has been a busy market hub, a courthouse, a wartime shelter and an exhibition space. It still keeps many original features, including its arches, timber turret and traditional market bell.

We want to protect this history while making sure the building can be used and enjoyed again.
