Tyne Coast College Campus

Exciting plans are already underway to relocate Tyne Coast College to our town centre but there is plenty still to talk about.

About the site

The college’s proposed move from Westoe to create a campus spanning King Street and Barrington Street is part funded by £20m from the Department for Education Capital Transformation Fund.

Space is already being cleared on King Street and the former job centre in Barrington Street will follow. The Grade II listed 16 Barrington Street will be integrated into the new campus – bringing together our town’s past and future.

A planning application is set to be submitted next year and we’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more information.

Some things for you to consider

Plenty of opportunity

The new campus will bring hundreds of staff, students and parents into South Shields on a daily basis – helping create a vibrant town centre and more activity in King Street, Barrington Street and Chapter Row, which will be great for business. It will bring modern design and new streetscapes bringing a fresh look and feel and new energy to our town centre while returning a listed building to life.

A couple of challenges to overcome

Our town centre is filled with history. Creating the College Campus will involve protecting our heritage and integrating it carefully with our future. At the same time we will need to limit the impact of construction work for residents, businesses and visitors.

Some ideas to explore

The Tyne Coast College Campus will create a spark igniting a new look, feel and energy in South Shields. Its design will look to our future but respect our past. Re-imagined planting, seating and lighting will better connect the town centre with Market Place, Mill Dam, Harton Quays and Holborn.
