Southern Gateway
Sitting south of King Street, the Southern Gateway is how many visitors enter south Shields and creates their first impression of our town.
About the site
On one side the metro line, on the other Anderson Street, this area includes Fowler, Thomas and Winchester Streets as well as the new transport interchange.
Some things for you to consider
Plenty of opportunity
Stacked with fantastic Victorian architecture and plenty of space to develop, Southern Gateway is ripe for renovation. The refurbishment of the Riddicks building shows just what is possible. There’s also a real gap in the market for food and drink businesses to fill.
Some Challenges
There’s a lot of unused land and buildings here including the former library on Prince Georg Square, which doesn’t present a lively image of our town. The number of closed shutters on Fowler Street suggests an unsustainable number of retail outlets. The character of the area has to change and we have sites available to kick start that process.

Some ideas to explore
First impressions matter. We want our town to leave a lasting one – so we’ve had some ideas that will bring life back to this area. They include:
- Homes for families and older people.
- Planting green spaces in Fowler Street.
- Repurposing our Victorian buildings creating potential homes for new food and drink outlets and offices.
- College accommodation.
