Town Centre
Our proud heritage and industrial wealth is still clearly visible in our town centre.
About the site
Just think about our fantastic Market Place or Barclays Bank on King Street or The Scotia on Mile End Road. Changes to the way we live such as online shopping and working from home have changed how the town centre has been used in recent years, stealing a little of our vibrancy.
Some things for you to consider
Plenty of opportunity
Our town centre is already set to receive a vibrancy boost with the exciting news that South Tyneside College is relocating to King Street. We expect that this will bring hundreds of pupils, parents and staff to the heart of our town – providing plenty of opportunity to rejuvenate business. The town centre is well connected with transport links and easily walkable thanks to widespread pedestrianisation.
Some challenges
All town centres face the same challenges as South Shields when it comes to dwindling high streets – such as low footfall and empty shops. Our Market Place is a significant space that only realises its potential on market days.

Some ideas to explore
Market Place revitalisation
We’re proud of our 18th century Market Place and have invested significantly over recent years providing new paving, seating and lighting but we could do more to unlock its full potential with an expanded programme of events to attract people.
King Street improvements
King Street already has a great bone structure. We could enhance our fantastic Victorian buildings by planting pockets of green spaces and seating.
